PERSONALITY
intense Tycho Davies is a whipcrack in a quiet room, and it’s really up to you to decide whether that’s exciting or horribly, awfully annoying. He’s a buzzing lightbulb of a guy, always thinking, always doing, always on. There’s a charm to it, certainly, and he is undeniably a go-getter, but his outgoing nature lacks warmth, and his incandescence is as apt to incinerate relationships as illuminate a room.

ambitious & bull-headed Burning so bright, it ought not surprise to know that Tycho aims high. If he sees something he wants, he goes for it. No waffling, no doubt, no going easy on the competition. He’ll run himself ragged in pursuit of a goal, though to his benefit he is quite good at scaling his goals so that they become obtainable. Tycho’s not in a rush to succeed, really. Slow and steady wins the race. It’s knowing when to fold that trips him up. Tycho has a hard time letting himself fail, and will beat his head against a wall until that wall breaks or he does.

unflappable So, Tycho is a lot, and he’s not nearly as charismatic as his confidence would imply. Lucky for him, it’s really hard to bring Tycho down. Not only is he stubborn, he’s pretty much unshakeable – a trait that made him even more obnoxious to bullies in school. In a crisis, Tycho is cool as a cucumber. Of course, the other side of the coin is that in moments that require an emotional response, Tycho doesn’t always bring the right energy. He’s very awkward in that way.

?sensitive? It’s not that he lacks empathy. On the contrary, he is a deeply, almost anxiously empathetic person. Maybe that's why ghosts like to bug him so much. It’s a quality he does his best to bury, something he sees as a deep and dangerous vulnerability, but in slower moments, you see it – a somber room sits heavily on his shoulders, for instance. He tends to match his closest friends’ emotions, getting angry when they’re angry, or sad when they’re sad. Not a great person to have around to talk you out of doing something out of spite. And yet, they still gave him a prefect badge.

?responsible? No, Tycho is not a sensible person, but he does have a strong protective instinct and a willingness to hold himself accountable. At times, he can be downright self-sacrificing, picking up the slack when it’s not his responsibility, or throwing himself under the bus for a pal. He’s stronger, he reasons, and more able to take it. Always, he approaches this sort of thing stoically, like it’s just what he has to do, but there’s an obvious softness to it—most visible in the way he continues to reach out to and support his half-siblings in his father’s absence.

adventurous Don’t get it mixed up: this guy ain’t practical. Tycho likes to try new things, go new places, and attempt the impossible. He is a risktaker, and that comes back to bite him in the ass on the regular. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine. He’s pretty sure he’s immortal.

high int, low wis Tycho is really quite brilliant, a quick study with a wealth of knowledge, but hot damn is he bad at exercising common sense. Drawing upon past knowledge and learning from experience? Never heard of her.

excessively independent Oh! Here! I finally found them! The abandonment issues! Tycho likes the idea of being needed, does not like needing anyone else. Even his fondest friends, the people he thinks the world of, may find him a bit aloof. Tycho does not need anyone’s approval or support to do what he wants to do. Largely, this has benefitted him in life – people, employers especially, love a self-starter – but when it comes to more intimate relationships, he is far, far too distant. He won’t let anyone else get close enough for it to matter if they leave.

HISTORY
Notable Family Members:
Roger Davies, father, former pro quidditch player, former model. One time Ravenclaw heartthrob Roger Davies has been living a sad rockstar lifestyle since graduating from Hogwarts. An almost entirely absentee father to his many children, he is a C-list celebrity known for quidditch team hopping and modeling work after his many paternity suits. He was in the news recently for violating the statute of secrecy, trying to sell fizzing whizbees to muggles as drugs to make some cash. Of all his children, Tycho is closest to him, though that's not saying much. Still, Tycho feels some responsibility for his father -- parenting the parent -- and it has been hard to extricate that feeling of obligation.

Abigail Ross, mother, alchemical astronomer. The muggleborn former Hufflepuff is loving but exceedingly busy, having spent most of her life running herself ragged trying to make ends meet working a commission-based job that she loved but wasn't terribly reliable (when the money came in, it came in floods, but there isn't a high demand for alchemical astronomers). Abigail keeps one foot planted firmly in the muggle world despite her magical occupation. Her legal union with Roger Davies was both short-lived (about 30 months total) and ill-advised.

Grandma & Grandpa Ross. Muggles. A cashier at the local grocer and a retired fisherman currently selling handmade lures, respectively. Tycho is very close with both of them.

Roger Davies' Extended Brood siblings, various. Tycho has a number of half-siblings due to his father's many, many exploits. The youngest confirmed is a second year in Hufflepuff. There's also a 7th year Slytherin, and very, very likely others. Although Roger tends to disappear from their lives pretty quickly, as Tycho finds out about them, he makes a point of reaching out to try and establish a relationship.

Hometown: Aberdeen, in a small home with his mother and maternal grandparents

History:
family. Roger Davies was dissatisfied with his career trajectory. Despite captaining Ravenclaw quidditch in his day, no teams would bring him on first string out the gate. So, he hopped around from team to team in search of what he was sure he deserved, then went overseas to the US, where he sort of found it, but at the cost of playing the sport in a place where few people cared about it. Eventually he made a jump to modeling before returning to the UK (after the War) to try and achieve some of that homegrown fame he so desperately craved.

In Aberdeen, he met Abigail Ross, a muggleborn witch trying to make ends meet as an alchemical astronomer – a highly specialized career that’s difficult to make truly sustainable without tenure somewhere. After a whirlwind romance, they wed. It was amply clear within the first year that they were not a good match, but they tried to make it work, anyway, bringing a baby boy into the mix. They divorced after thirty months together, and Roger suddenly became far too busy with his career to help raise a kid.

early childhood. Tycho’s mother was his primary caregiver, supported by her own parents after she moved back home. Roger was in Tycho’s life, yes, maybe one or two weekends a month, more once he got older and they could do things together, but it always seemed like Dad couldn’t wait to get back to not being a parent. Tycho never quite got over that, but he found a good balance in the love of his mother and maternal grandparents.

He grew up stuck between two worlds. Abigail may have been a witch with a great deal of witchy education (the magical equivalent of a M.Sc) and a witch’s job, but she lived most of her life post-Roger Davies in the muggle world and so Tycho, similarly, saw very little magic while he was with her. She couldn't shut it out entirely, though. First of all was the fact that Tycho had a knack for attracting spirits. All manner of aliven't folks showed up at the house in Aberdeen wanting to talk to Tycho, which would've been creepier if not for the fact that Abigail was already well familiar with ghosts and just wanted them to, as they say, "feck off."

And then there was Dad. Whenever Roger showed up--whew. It was all Quidditch and visits by Floo to see friends and trips to Diagon Alley, and for a time Tycho resented his mother for keeping this part of the world from him. It did’t matter, though, really. His mother and his muggle grandparents were more reliable, more loving, than his more exciting father, and anyway, soon enough he’d be going to Hogwarts and then he could make the choice for himself where he’d wind up.

hogwarts. Better be Gryffindor—except it wasn’t. Boy, the sorting hat really wanted to put that boy in Gryffindor, but he refused. He wanted to be where his dad had been. So, Ravenclaw it was, where his bright mind would see proper cultivation and his worst habits would be encouraged by equally incorrigible roommates. Tycho took an immediate interest in all the ghosts milling about Hogwarts -- boy there sure were a lot of them -- and spent a lot of time getting to know the ones who were willing to give him the time of day. It made him a little weird, pushing an otherwise average young lad into social pariah territory outside of his friend group. Not that he minded.

Would that he could say that his time at Hogwarts was uneventful. In many ways, it was, really. He did a lot of studying, some limited snogging, he tried out every year for the Quidditch team in hopes of making his dad proud and failed each time, and he got up to his fair share of trouble with his roommates, a couple of whom were notorious for being absolute hellions. It seemed a bit like a punishment, making him Prefect of that dorm, but when you look at it, he was always the one taking responsibility for the other's actions, the one willing to say 'no' to something -- more because he didn't feel like doing it than out of any sense of propriety or safety.

Tycho took his prefecting duties seriously, but his time was almost wholly consumed by keeping his room and yearmates out of trouble and alive. Between that and trying to be a good student, he was run rather ragged. It stressed him out, sharpened his already sort of rough edges, but he came out of it mostly intact. Tired, but whole. On the academic front, he thrived. If he couldn't impress his father with athletic skill, then he would certainly earn his mother's praise with academic work. Tycho grabbed NEWTs in Ghoul Studies, Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Potions, Herbology, and Ancient Runes.

post-warts. After Hogwarts, Tycho dove right into higher education, intending to obtain further certifications in post-life studies, because why not monetize what comes so naturally to you? He attended Edinburgh Erudite College for his undergrad, working an array of menial jobs and apartment hopping, never staying in one place for long, then graduated to the London College of Arcane Sciences where he is currently studying parapsychology with the intent to become a Post-Life Counselor, which is a nice way of saying a Ghostbuster.

Tycho got the invite to Henhurst at just the right time: his then flatmates, three vampires, had grown tired of him and were almost certainly planning on feeding on him. Being a vampiric thrall didn't sound too awful, but it probably would've made office hours difficult.

MISCELLANEOUS
Wand: 8", mango wood, will-o-wisp cinder core. This "inherited" wand (a gift from his father while he was working overseas in the US) worked for Tycho seemingly by luck -- or perhaps because he was too willful for it to reject him. The base of the wand is intricately carved with braids and folded bird wings.
Patronus: Goose
Familiar: Ferret, named Ballistic Missile; Missy for short.
Favorite Quidditch Team: Aberdeen Avocets, hometown all the way
Skills: Attracting ghosts, speed reading, pain tolerance, not trumpet, navigating the ivory tower of academia despite having a largely working class background
Fun Facts:
  • Likes to "practice" trumpet in his living space, particularly when neighbors are being noisy. Has been doing this since Hogwarts. He does not actually play trumpet.
  • Fascinated by makeup, but too intimidated to try it, himself. Instead, he collects makeup palettes and sort of hoards them.
  • Lied to get into a sleep study about people haunted by Mares once so that he had a place to crash between apartments, wound up getting haunted by his own mare for seven months.
